　　Patients and rats with cirrhosis and ascites (rCHA) present portal hypertension and circulatory dysfunction.Synthetic vasopressin (AVP) receptor agonistsable to inducesystemicandmesentericvasoconstriction have shown their usefulness in reducing portal pressure (PP) in this condition. In this study we demonstrated the potentialtherapeutic value of anew family of partial V1a-AVPreceptor agonists with a preferential splachnic vasoconstrictor effect in experimental cirrhosis with ascites. In fact, the intravenous administration of theV1a-AVPreceptor agonistdose-dependently decreased PP, did not modify mean arterial pressure (MAP) and increased systemic vascular resistance. This occurred in the setting of a marked improvement in urine volume and urinary excretion of sodiumduring the first day of chronic treatment. These results suggest that partial V1a-AVPreceptor agonism could be a useful pharmacological treatment in decompensated cirrhotic patients.
