　　Dr. Ming Luo is Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Associate Director in the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering, and Co-Director in the Shared X-ray Crystallography Facility at University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB). He received his PhD in biological sciences from Purdue University in 1987. In the same year after a short period of postdoctoral training, he joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to tenured Associate Professor in 1992 and Full Professor in 1996. In 2000, he became Cheung Kong Distinguished Professor (adjunct) at Peking University. His research is primarily centered on the atomic structures of viral proteins and viral particles of various viruses including influenza and common cold viruses. His group has determined the crystal structures of numerous viral proteins and their complexes with RNAs, antibodies, receptors, or antiviral drugs. Additionally, he has made many important contributions to the structure-based design of antiviral drugs. Recently, his group has identified novel inhibitors with broad spectrum of antiviral activity. In the last three decades, Dr. Luo has published a total of 145 scientific papers in prestigious journals including PNAS (7), Molecular Cell (1), Nature Structural Biology (1), Science (5), and Nature (3).
