Dr. Gao's laboratory has a long-standing interest in elucidating the origins and evolution of HIV and SIV, and in studying HIV/SIV gene function and pathogenic mechanisms from the evolutionary perspective. These studies have led to new strategies to better understand HIV-1 viral biology, pathogenesis and drug resistance, and to design new AIDS vaccine candidates. Many patients fail current antiretroviral therapies because HIV can quickly evolve to resist treatment with multiple drugs. Dr. Gao's laboratory is currently studying the molecular mechanisms behind this failure and establishing more sensitive assays that detect multiple drug resistant mutations so that doctors can choose drugs that patients do not resist to for future treatment.
