报告人简介:

Dr. Yang is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, the University of New South Wales . He received his Bachelor of Medicine degree from Beijing Medical University ( 北医) in 1993. In the same year, he obtained a full scholarship to study physiology and nutrition at Columbia University in New York City, USA . He was awarded a Ph.D. degree in 1998 and after a short stint at Harvard University , he started his teaching and research career at the Department of Biochemistry, National University of Singapore. He was a lecturer in1999 and worked his way to a tenured associate professor at the end of 2006, when he decided to join the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia . In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious inaugural Future Fellowship by the Australian Research Council.

Dr. Yang’s research has focused on the storage and trafficking of lipids in eukaryotic cells. As a graduate student, he and his colleagues cloned the key enzymes in the synthesis of cholesterol esters, leading to a first author paper in Science. His own group have identified novel molecules that may mediate cholesterol trafficking or regulate lipid storage in the form of lipid droplets. His group uncovered a novel link between lipid droplet morphology and adipocyte differentiation. Dr. Yang has received nearly 20 grants (~3 million US dollars) as a Principal Investigator (PI) from major funding agencies in Singapore and Australia . He also received ~US$430K grant from the Ara Paseghian Medical Research Foundation based in Tucson, USA from 2007-2010. He has published a total of more than 50 scientific papers in prestigious journals including Science, Journal of Cell Biology, Trends in Cell Biology, PLoS Genetics and EMBO J. He has been invited to speak or chair a session at over 20 international conferences.
