In this talk Dr. KLENA will present some data regarding the epidemiology of diarrheal diseases in some Middle Eastern countries (primarily Egypt and Libya ) and discuss methods that have been used to characterize bacterial and viral pathogens. As part of the talk he will discuss PulseNet International, a mechanism for detection of diffuse food-borne outbreaks, Calicinet, a network for characterizing outbreaks caused by noroviruses, and whole genome sequencing initiatives, and discuss whether these systems are a good model for the current public health situation in China .
International Emerging Infections Program (IEIP) is part of the Division of Emerging Infections and Surveillance Services in the National Center for Preparedness, Detection and Control of Infectious Diseases (NCPDCID). It consists of 6 Regional Centers in China , Egypt , Guatemala , Kenya , Thailand and Bangladesh .
