报告内容简介:
Dr. Wei Gu is recognized internationally for his pioneering contributions to the regulation of p53 function. Dr. Gu began his independent research at Columbia University in 1999. At the time, it was widely accepted that histones are the only cellular substrates for protein acetylation. However, following up on his initial discovery of p53 acetylation, Dr. Gu reported that p53 is a substrate for various acetylases and deacetylases, and that its functional activity is tightly regulated by acetylation during cellular stress responses. In particular, his group demonstrated that site-specific acetylation is a major mechanism for promoter-specific activation of p53 targets in vivo. Thus, Dr. Gu played the leading role in establishing acetylation as the primary signal for p53 regulation. This groundbreaking work also laid the foundation for the current view that reversible acetylation is a general mechanism for regulation of non-histone proteins. In addition, the Gu laboratory made significant contributions to most of the major mechanisms of p53 regulation, which clearly has important implications well beyond p53 biology. He has coauthored 96 publications in high impact journals, including20 papers in CNS (Cell, Nature and Science) and another ~20 papers in Molecular Cell, Cell Metabolism, Cancer Cell, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Genetics and Nat Struct Mol Biol..On the basis of his scientific accomplishments, Dr. Gu has been awarded many prestigious honors, including the Irma Hirschl Trust Award, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Scholar Award, the Stohlman Scholar Award, and the Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar Award. Within Columbia University, he was promoted to tenured Full Professor in 2007.
